Devon is probably the most popular county in England.
Discovered by the Prince Regent in the early nineteenth century, Torbay quickly became THE place to holiday with its mild climate, warm water and royal connections. With the coming of the railways, bank holidays and cheap third class travel, Torquay and Paignton fast became tourist resorts. The bay was so popular that the Great Western Railway called the area the English Riviera.
Further south The South Hams remained largely untouched. Criss-crossed by winding lanes and high hedgebanks, the South Hams is the quintessential English countryside that people love with its rolling hills, pretty villages and beautiful, coastline. Some of the best older property and barn conversions are found tucked away in this corner of the county.
Dartmoor National Park was the first National Park in the country. Its 365 square miles of open moorland encompass the last wilderness in England. But it is not all heath and moorland. Nestling in the valleys are some delightful houses, mostly constructed of granite. On the southern edge of the moor are some thriving villages and communities which use ease of access to the A.38 Expressway and its speedy link to the cathestral city and county town of Exeter and the larger city of Plymouth.
Finally there is Teignbridge. In some ways the forgotten part of Devon, the area has some beautiful villages and hamlets in rolling countryside and close to the coast which are too often by-passed for the popular South Hams. Unlike the South Hams, road and rail communications are easier and Exeter is never more than 25 minutes drive.
