DO YOU HAVE A SEPTIC TANK?
IF YOU DO, NOW IS THE TIME TO CONTACT THE ENVIRONMENT
AGENCY.
Most of us who live in the country don't have the benefit of
mains drainage and need to be a bit more careful about what we
flush away. We do benefit from greatly reduced water rates as
a result though!
Private drainage includes cess pits, septic tanks and sewage
treatment systems. If you have a sepic tank or sewage
treatment system you will need to register with the Environment
Agency for an environmental exemption permit by the end of this
year. This matters however old the system is. If you
don't register, your system will be classified as illegal and the
maximum fine for any pollution will be set at £20,000.
Another bureaucratic regulation perhaps, but at least this one
is free to most private householders and it will enable the
Authority to have a much more efficient record of private drainage
systems.
To find out more about registration, visit the Enviroment Agency
website. The form is fairly simple and they reckon it can be
completed in 8 minutes!
STOP PRESS! 12TH SEPTEMBER
2011. The Environment Agency has
suspended the requirement to register in England pending further
discussions with government, although voluntary registration is
being accepted.
